Annette’s Podcast Selection:

Dare to Lead: The Advice Trap and Staying Curious Just a Little Longer

Why did you choose this podcast and why this episode specifically?

I was hesitant to select a Brené Brown podcast given her popularity, but she’s popular for a reason. Brené is gifted at translating social science research into actionable strategies for well-being, healthy relationships, and authentic leadership. This episode is one that I’ve listened to multiple times and shared with others. It’s a good reminder of the pitfalls (and seduction) of giving advice and the power of asking questions.

What did you learn from this Podcast?

There are 3 ways giving advice can go “off the rails”: (1) you may be solving the wrong problem, (2) your advice isn’t as good as you think it is (it is biased and based on your own history) and (3) you deny others the space to figure thing out for themselves.
