Employer Relations Community of Practice

The Employer Relations Community of Practice is a group of career services colleagues who share common challenges, opportunities, and a passion for employer relations work. Community members will collaborate to deepen their understanding and build skills through ongoing learning and knowledge sharing.

Examples of past topics this community has engaged in are employer relationship management, helping employers with Handshake, collaborating across employer relations, and federal and state government hiring practices.

What is a Community of Practice (CoP)?

Communities of Practice, defined by Etienne and Beverly Wenger-Trayner, are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

What topics does this CoP connect about?

Examples of topics we may connect about include recruiting and employment trends, working with employers, and hosting employer events. 

Who leads this community?

This community is led by a fellow colleague, currently Leanne Morris (School of Education Career Center), and supported by the Office of Academic and Career Success (OACS).

The community leader schedules meetings, solicits guest speakers and facilitators, and communicates with CoP members. 

How will members engage with each other?

Email Listserv: Used for upcoming meeting reminders and communication, sharing resources among community members, and other communications as needed.

Virtual or In-person Meetings: A few meetings will be held each semester, and will be a mix of virtual and in-person depending on timing and topic.

CoP leaders may determine additional modes of communication including, but not limited to, Google folders and Teams channels. 

What kind of commitment is the Employer Relations CoP?

Members are welcome to join meetings and interact with the group as much or as little as they would like. Members have the opportunity to take on leadership roles as facilitators/presenters in the community or are welcome to simply join for meetings that are a good fit for their capacity and/or interests.

Career services staff members and any others interested in employer relations work. Membership is not determined by position or title, but instead by interest in this particular topic. If you have any questions, please contact info.oacs@wisc.edu.

How do I join this Community of Practice?

You can sign up for the Employer Relations Community of Practice email list below to become a member of the community. The email list will be used to share upcoming meeting dates and reminders, resources, and other communications as needed.

To join the Employer Relations CoP Email List:

  1. CLICK HERE to send an email to employerrelationscop+subscribe@g-groups.wisc.edu
  2. Within a minute or two, you’ll receive an email to confirm your membership. Make sure you are logged into your UW-Madison G Suite account, not your personal Google account, to complete the steps provided in the membership email.
  3. To complete your subscription to the email list, reply to the email you received and send a blank email. **Do not use the option of clicking the ‘Join This Group’ button.**
  4. You will receive a confirmation email once you have replied to the email and have joined the group.
  5. After completing these steps, you can begin using the Employer Relations CoP Google Group and Email List. To send a message to the group, simply enter employerrelationscop@g-groups.wisc.edu in the “To” field of your email client.
