What is a Community of Practice (CoP)?

Communities of Practice, defined by Etienne and Beverly Wenger-Trayner, are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

What topics does this CoP connect about?

Examples of topics we may connect about include best practices, theories, trends, and techniques for working with students in the career development context. In the past, this community has discussed coaching students on graduate school applications, AI and applicant tracking systems, and discussions on hiring trends.

Who leads this community?

This community is led by a fellow colleague, currently Paige LaPoint (CALS Career Services), and supported by the Office of Academic and Career Success (OACS).

The community leader schedules meetings, solicits guest speakers and facilitators, and communicates with CoP members.

How will members engage with each other?

Email Listserv: Used for upcoming meeting reminders and communication, sharing resources among community members, and other communications as needed.

Virtual or In-person Meetings: A few meetings will be held each semester, and will be a mix of virtual and in-person depending on timing and topic.

CoP leaders may determine additional modes of communication including, but not limited to, Google folders and Teams channels.

What kind of commitment is the Career Coaching/Advising CoP?

Members are welcome to join meetings and interact with the group as much or as little as they would like. Members have the opportunity to take on leadership roles as facilitators/presenters in the community or are welcome to simply join for meetings that are a good fit for their capacity and/or interests.
